This lesson plan allows students to make parallels between Florida today and rural Florida in 1898. In addition, students will compare 100 years ago with today and learn how historic buildings and artifacts can be used as tools for learning.

Butter Churning
These lesson plans allow children to learn about churning butter in the late 19th century. Children will learn how families living in Florida were self-sufficient by making their own butter, in addition to learning how this activity was a chore for children. Students will also learn about the process of making butter and participate in a group activity that tests their knowledge on butter churning.

Sugar Cane
These lesson plans help students discover the significance of sugar cane in early Florida. Students will explore the process of harvesting sugar cane, and the different types of machines (mills) used to turn sugar cane into cane syrup. In addition, students will examine how sugar cane was used and consumed in rural Florida in 1898.
